Abstract

In this study, the karstic shapes developed on the travertine within the Başkale Basin which is located in eastern part of the Southeastern Taurus Mountains were investigated. The travertine at the base of basin while clearing the development of the basin also caused the formation of karstic shapes. Young tectonism conditions on the karstification in the basin have an effective precaution. Başkale Fault Zone which is Neotectonic period formation cut karstic structures in the N-S direction and directed karstification. The faults, which played an important role in the formation of the basin, also provided back-type travertine formations in the basin. Travertine cones, travertine terraces and travertine ponds, caves, collapse dolines are present on the back-type travertines developed at the basin floor. The area which is closed basin up to the Quaternary (endoergic) was opened to the external drainage by having catches Zap Water in Quaternary. The active tectonics in the area and the opening to the outer drainage of the basin in the Quaternary have activated the karstification and allow the surface drainage to go underground.
