Abstract

If we view the world as a system of meaningfulness, we see that everything is made up of signs. From communicative signs, which began with the human existence in nature, to the signs used by the modern day man, all languages and visual signs have been the subject of semiology, which came into existence in the first half of the 20th century. Every sign, which man gave sense to through his learning acquisition, come into being through certain relationships such as antilogy and analogy. They benefit from semiological analyses in all artistic disciplines in order to give sense to works of art, which are composed of system of images. This study seeks to analyze Claude Monet’s “Impression: Soleil Levant”, which was painted in 1872 and which movement of impressionism was named after, according to the semiological method of famous French semiotician Algirdas Julien Greimas. Impressionism, the most important representative of which is Claude Monet, has a significant place in the history of art.
