Abstract

According to the famous literary critic, thinker and aesthetic theorist Walter Benjamin (1993: 15), every age has a childlike side; a side towards the dreams. People are not only a part of a physical universe but also a part and a creation in a symbolic universe. This mentioned symbolic universe is transferred to narratives first, and then various forms of art with various literary, visual and audial instruments peculiar to each age. Nowadays, cinema presents the contradictions of human desperation to nature, itself and nature, again as a modern mythology. In this work, the film "Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi" (2013), an Anatolian tragedy decorated with mystical and fantasy elements directed by Onur Ünlü, will be analyzed from the standpoint of semiotics. "Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi" is a surrealistic story based on an experimental narrative. In this film Onur Ünlü focuses on topics such as love, tragedy, existence, will to power and human nature. "Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi", which is examined within the scope of the study, has been interpreted as a representation system that expresses how the period in which it is being understood is algebraically interpreted.
