Abstract

Gender is the social assumptions that are assigned to men and women by the society and that refers to the inequality between two sexes. These inequalities leading to gender stereotypes and gender roles are transferred to children via mass media. Children, in the stage of understanding the social environment they are living and obtaining the perceptions of men and women in society, are influenced by each and every environmental context they are exposed to. The thing which underlies the formation of a child’s adulthood identity is the messages they get from mass media such as children’s magazines. Based on an integrated method, the aim of this study is to put forth the strategies for the representation of gender in Turkish children’s magazines. Within this context, by the use of some linguistic and visual categories, these magazines will be examined whether they were written with an equal or gender biased approach.
