Abstract

The determinative dynamics of sonic design in fiction films are aesthetic rules, variables affecting the audience and the developments in soundtrack technology. Although the similar dynamics are valid for documentary films as well, determinative different variables in the design of auditory universe are considered. On the contrary of fictional narrations, the dimension causing the difference is the transforming quality of documentary films into filmic narrations by taking the matters belonging to real and/or historical events and facts. Similarly, in documentary cinematography, it is possible to define the sonic design as an auditory architecture. For building up the architecture of documentary films, the setting up a phonic strategy intended to the presented thesis, saying and discussions and building the auditory universe over this is also needed. For documentary films, the concept of phonic strategy includes the assessment of the boundaries between natural one and artificial one. As an extension of this inclusion too, how it is formed by intertwining the algorithmic composition of phonic reflection and historical/cultural identity come into question. The study tries to find out; how soundtrack is used compared to theme, narrative tone and the mood in documentary films and what differences soundtracks presents between varied formats/manner (style) of documentary films.
