Abstract

Even though Ankara hammams have been studied a lot, they have not been investigated sufficiently in terms of their waterways. The studies mostly focused on architectural composition of the baths, and not evaluated in terms of their functional systems including water systems as part of passive survivability means. Hence, in this study in total six Ottoman period baths located in Ankara, Altındağ province have been investigated in order to detect their waterways. Well understanding of original waterways and systems in the case study baths as part of this study is important not only for the understandings of these supplementary components of architectural integrity in these baths, but also for the sustainability of their performance and appear as priority values/elements during their preservation studies. Those water system elements have architectural, technical, historical, and documentary values, as well as they have rareness value today because of their demolish and renewal with the new technology in most of the baths. Thus, their documentation is highly an important issue. Literature survey, in situ studies, and archival investigations are the primary methods of this study. With this study, it is understood that in case study baths water systems have been preserved to some extent, yet each new restoration effort causes new damages to these systems.
