Abstract

The political cartoon tradition has offered rich materials about turbulent transformations of Turkish modernization history since Tanzimat as the other oral or written sources. Humor tradition in Turkey had made cartoons one of the important sources of research in Ottoman-Turkish modernization studies. In this sense, the cartoons revealed the positive or negative attitude towards women who were the observable visual symbols of the modernization period. The cynical and critical approach to the women in political cartoons point out the social reaction to the administrative decisions about woman rights in the era. And also they express the reaction to the identity construction of the republic within the practices of daily life. Hence, in this paper, the political cartoon will be handled by the means of the attitude towards the changing statute of woman that emerged with the given female suffrage in the 1930 municipal elections in Turkey.
