Abstract

This study was aimed at determining opinions of elementary school teachers working at public schools of Ministry of National Education in Turkey about the effect of professional teaching knowledge training of undergraduate education on their teaching career. It was a case study of qualitative research design. Criterion sampling and convenience sampling was used in the study among purposeful sampling methods. The 18 participants of the study were opted for having the necessary qualifications depending on research objectives and the problem being addressed and data were collected by semi structured interviews through a researcher-made protocol. The obtained data was analyzed by descriptive analysis within four major themes. According to research findings, the participants indicated that the most useful course in their career was teaching practice and the least one was class management; however, they were not ready to teach upon graduation and therefore they disqualified their professional teaching knowledge training of undergraduate education. The study resulted in that professional teaching knowledge training of undergraduate education seemed incapable to upskill teacher candidates with the required skills and competencies to fulfill the teaching profession thoroughly.
