Abstract

In the following article the fragment of a marble female head is analysed. It is most likely belonging to the rare early Hellenistic sculptures of Lycia. Our observations have shown that this piece must be dated in the 3rd century BC. In addition, we were able to determine that it represents a portrait of the Alexandrian Queen Arsinoe II. Philadelphus. This portrait, which comes from Letoon, must have belonged to a larger than life statue. Unfortunately we could not supply an answer to the question of in what a context these statue was placed there. Certainly the head of Fethiye is very important for the understanding of early Hellenistic art of Lycia.
