The gecekondu-dwellers who previously resisted the demolishment of their gecekondu are still resisting. In fact, women are leading actors of rebellion. The gender asymmetry immanent in society and also in the system is a very important matter that must be solved. The existing gender asymmetry will be examined by findings of the field study performed in gecekondu neighborhoods that are exposed to urban transformation. Gülsuyu and Gülensu, gecekondu neighborhoods of Maltepe in Istanbul, are chosen for the field study. Analyses and research based on gender are very limited as well because of the gender-blind approach employed by academic studies.
