Abstract

Ottoman Empire’s religious court records, with were maintained locally, provide invaluable data regarding the socio-economic, cultural and religious practices of the time periods fort ey were kept my contribution deals with the court records kept in the Famagusta District in Cyprus court records that were kept between 1871 to 1878. My work aims translate Famagusta’s religious court record into modern Turkish. This stady covers the years between 1287 and 1295 in Hijri years and between 1871 and 1878 in the Gregorian calender. This part of the court records are 50 pages and comprised of 103 court cases. İt is notable that property, real estate sales, inheritance, alimony, homicide and custody related cases dominate this era’s records. Whit this study I envision to contribute to the literature on the court records of Famagusta between 1871 and 1878, particularly the literature in the field of sociology, law, history andsocial sciences
