Abstract

In this study, the causal relationships between self-sufficiency and energy efficiency in Turkey are analysed, using yearly data from 1971 to 2009. In order to examine these relationships a number of econometric methods are applied, such as the Augmented Dickey-Fuller Unit Root Test, Johansen Cointegration Test and Granger Causality test based on the Error Correction Model. The empirical findings from these tests show that there is unidirectional causality from self-sufficiency to energy efficiency. As a result energy efficiency decreases as long as foreign dependency in energy generation reduces for Turkey between 1971 and 2009.
