With this study, it has been aimed to be determined the translation theories to be preferred at the translation of literary texts. Translation theories have been evaluated under two main topics like source-oriented theories and target-oriented theories. From these two main topics, especially the target-oriented translation theories with their subtitles have been explained in detail. The literary works “Siddhartha” written by Hermann Hesse and “Yılanı Öldürseler” written by Yaşar Kemal have been analyzed in order to determine which translation theories to be preferred on literary translation. The translation criticism theories besides the translation theories have been tried to explained, because this study will be also a translation criticism through the translation theories.
