Abstract

The invention and spreading of photographic images in the second half of the nineteenth century paved the way for image bombardment which is one of the most important facts of twentieth century. Image bombardment progresses immensely with the contribution of the cinema, television, satellite broadcasting, internet, personal computers, tablet computers and smart phones. Analyzing the reactions of masses exposed to image bombardment merely in terms of sociocultural perspectives will not give the whole picture. The aim of this study is to argue that the temporary empathic paralysis of masses caused by image bombardment based on neurobiological perspectives that is the common ground of Christian Keysers, Frans de Waal, Michael Shermer and Robin Dunbar’s arguments. The limits of empathy, which has been developed by human brain through hundreds of thousands of years, were drawn for one hundred and fifty people.
