Abstract

Imagery of nature and romance that came in poetry in concurrence with the romantic movement began to impress our poets after the Tanzimat Era (the political reforms made in the Ottoman State in 1839). Abdülhak Hamid Tarhan, who frequently use nature and romance in his poems, opened up a new horizon in the field of poetry with the “Hacle” he wrote in 1887. Although the “Hacle” (Nuptial Chamber) appears to be the sibling of the “Makber” (Grave) poem, it is entirely an imaginary, in the poet’s words, a legendary poem. In this poem, Hamid manages to create different imagery by concomitantly presenting his new love, his desire of marriage, haunting phantoms of his former love, nature, death and romance. The plentifulnes of image in poet leads carnivalisation creating cheerful atmosphere.
