Many invaders, settlers and immigrants have come here over the centuries. The birth of the new and independent Republic of Cyprus was realized on 16 August 1960. In 1975, the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus was declared. After eight years of failed negotiations with the leadership of the Greek Cypriot community the north unilaterally declared its independence on 15 November 1983 under the name of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This was rejected by the UN and the Republic of Cyprus. The declaration of a Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was recognized by no nation other than Turkey.
