Abstract

In this study, we evaluate the activities of Antranik Efendi, an Armenian from Istanbul who made medallion portraits mainly on ivory, from the era of Sultan Abdulhamid II until the 1920's. Thanks to the Topkapi Palace Museum, Dolmabahce Palace Museum, various private collections and Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive documents, the profile of the artist in an Istanbul ambiance was explored. When all the art pieces by Antranik Efendi detected in museums and private collections were examined, it was evident that he was active from the 1870's and became prominent in tasvir-i humayun/medallion portraiture, which was prevalent in the painting of the era. Painter Antranik, who created Sultan portraits in the eras of Sultan Abdulhamid II, Sultan Mehmed Reşad and Sultan Vahdeddin on orders from the palace, was also known as a photographer and carver.
