Abstract

On May 27, 1960 the Turkish military staged for the first time in the Turkish history a coup d’état. The military coup d’état of May 27, 1960 can be seen as the result of many events in the 1950’s. Essentially the coup d’état was justified with the following reasons: The fear of losing laicism as the backbone of the state; repressions against the press; differences between Democratic Party (DP) and Republican People’s Party (CHP); political, economic and social status loss of the military as well as the economic crisis lasting from 1955 to 1960. With the coup d’état, changes in the constitution were anchored, which legalized and paved the army’s future inner political interventions. Thus, the intervention of May 27 become a ‘model case’ for later military coup d’états in Turkey.
