Mahmud al-Kashgari travelled among Turkic tribes one by one and studied thoroughly their languages and cultures, as brilliantly depicted in his work. His remarks on language and methods applied in his work verify that Mahmud al-Kashgari had extensive knowledge about Turkic written languages and detailed knowledge of Turkish vocabulary. Besim Ataly’s translation of this work, covering a rich variety of language materials, lists 8783 headworks in the index section. Defining headworks in this work through other information, verses, proverbs etc. enriches the vocabulary of the work.
