Abstract
In her first book “Niederungen (Lowlands)”, the 2009 Nobel Laureate in Literature, Herta Müller deals with the “homeland” perception of the German minority living in the Banat region of Romania. From the mouth of a little child, she presents the mistakes made by the German people living in this region in favor of nationalism and patriotism and their degenerated moral values after the World War II with an impressive expression. Narrating the relationship between the homeland – the citizen from the view point of a child, the writer mirrors the lies, the amoralities and the double faced lifes of the German people hiding behind the nationalist and patriotic discourse. The writer was obliged to live in the exile after drawing the reaction of the public by clearly presenting the“other”ing attitude of the society that she is a member of and the mistakes made under the mask of nationalism.
