Abstract

News photographs play quite a significant role in framing of news. In this context, news photographs makes some aspects of "reality" apparent by choosing deliberately choosing them and bringing them to the forefront while excluding some of its aspects consciously. This situation which causes different meanings to be created via the same source presents different frames to the readers and builds a new "reality" in the reader’s mind which is coded with ideological meanings. This study seeks to demonstrate the effects of news photographs published in newspapers about May 1st Labour and Solidarity Day on readers through the focus group interview method. In the study, it was found that opinions and thoughts of focus group members about the case study were shaped to a significant extent according to news photographs and that visual coding is more effective than linguistic coding with regard to framing.
