Abstract

The story of evil begins with the story of man. However, attracting attention to evil phenomenon as a philosophical problem coincides with the development of rational thought. With this attention, evil phenomenon has taken place in philosophical experience. And so the nature, origin, and purpose of evil began to be questioned. A new something is added to this questioning when theistic beliefs are point at issue: How the existence of evil in the world can be reconcile with the belief in the existence of a loving, powerful, fair and good God? In this study, philosophical meanings of the problem of evil and theodicies which put forward as a justification of evil are examined from different perspectives in both Western and Islamic thought. Although this study exhibits a short philosophical adventure of evil phenomenon, the essential purpose of it is to draw attention to the questioning of problem of evil more restrained in theological field in terms of human nature with reference to evil
