Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss both the characteristics and the social position of aging process which is a developmental stage of human life span. Thus, it was aimed to evaluate such discussion from the point of expected functions of adult education. It is the literatural review method that was used for this paper. Hence, the age were described generally and as a fact of aging itself and consequences have been defined through psychological, biological and socio-cultural dimensions. In the later section, the reasons and results of ageism which is prevalent in contemporary societies, have been described. By exhibiting the cognitive and socio-cultural roots of ageism, the role of adult education in preventing or eradicating such concepts was argued. Finally, there are some suggestions of social policies and educational projects that intend to teach the becoming aged, to increase the quality of living of the aged and to eliminate the stereotypes against the old people.
