This resistance took a heavy toll on the French, upon which they had to give up their hopes on Cilicia and abort mission. When General Gouraud came to attend a memorial ceremony in Canakkale, the speeches he gave made it apparent that he still felt sincere sympathy towards the Turks, against whom he fought to the last drop of blood both in Canakkale battles and during war of independence, where he even had to lose a part of his body. Nevertheless, he never showed hatred towards the Turks, but he became a "professional enemy" and was able to respect their heroism.
