Abstract
İstanbul, sahip olduğu tarihi mirastan dolayı dünyanın en önemli şehirlerinden biridir. Doğu Roma ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun başkenti olarak tarihe geçen bu şehir bulunduğu coğrafi konumu bakımından ilgi odağı olmuştur. Şehir, İstanbul ismini almadan önce farklı isimlerle anılmıştır. En eski ismi Byzantion, Secunda Roma, Nova Roma, Konstantinopolis, Rumiyyetü’l-Kübra, Taht-ı Rum, Gulgule-i Rum, İstanbol, İslambol, Payitaht-ı Saltanat, Taht-ı gâh-ı saltanat şeklinde isimler almıştır. 13. yüzyıl Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu’na merkezlik yapan Konstantinopolis böylece Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’na da başkentlik yapmaya başlamış ve bu durum 500 yıl devam etmiştir. 19. yüzyılda Coğrafya öğretimi için Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda birçok kitap ve risale basılmıştır. Ancak ders kitabı olması amacıyla basılmış olan bu kitaplara dayanılarak Osmanlı Devletinin başkenti İstanbul’u ele alan bir çalışma yoktur. Bu nedenle makalede 19. Yüzyılda İstanbul’da basılan sekiz coğrafya ders kitabı ele alınacak ve söz konusu kitaplara göre İstanbul konusu incelenecektir.

Abstract
Istanbul is one of the most important cities in the world, in that it has the historical inheritance. It was the capital city of both the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire after 1453, when it was captured by the Ottomans. It had different names prior to Istanbul, such as Byzantium, Antonia, Secunda Roma, Nova Roma, Constantinople, Rumiyyetü’l-Kübra, Taht-ı Rum, Gulgule-i Rum, İstanbol, İslambol, Payitaht-ı Saltanat, Taht-ı gâh-ı saltanat. Having conquered by the Ottomans, it was the capital city of the Ottoman and it maintained this feature until Turkish Republic was founded. In the mid of the 19th century and onwards it was witnessed that a lot of geography text books were published in the Ottoman Empire. However, it has not been made a comprehensive research concerning them yet. The aim of this study is to examine four geography text books printed in the mid of the 19th century.
