Abstract

Carl Gustav Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, is the name that draws attention to the effects of the archetypes on human life. The archetypal concept, which he describes as the first sample/first model, refers to a common legacy that human beings have inherited since ages. One of the archetypes in this heritage is the archetype of child. The archetype of child, that symbolizes regeneration and rebirth, is the eternal child/puer aeternus archetype that does not want to grow up and takes refuge in the love of the mother. Mai and Siyah is the turning point of Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’s who is one of the leading novelists in Turkish literature, writing activities. Ahmet Cemil who was the protagonist of the novel draws attention with his closeness to the eternal child/puer aeternus archetype. In this study, the characteristics of the eternal child/puer aeternus archetype were given and the archetypal features of the novel are sampled. According to the findings, it was seen that Ahmet Cemil was an eternal child who would not grow forever.
