OPINIONS ON USING TRADITIONAL MUSIC IN VOCAL TRAINING

Abstract

Vocal exercises, which have an important place in vocal training, vary by the type of training to be done (Turkish Folk Music, Turkish Classical Music, Western Music) and the forms of these genres. It is aimed that an individual should learn basic elements and forms appropriate to the genre and form he/she is performing and various singing techniques via the voice exercises that must be prepared in a certain systematic. It is an important matter that must be studied on to form the universal music language by presenting performing techniques incidental to the nation exercising due diligence in order to form exercise and method examples appropriate to Traditional Turkish Music (TFM, TCM). Moreover, it is thought that benefiting from the current systematic of Western music as a reference in this matter for the model to be formed for making individuals gain the traditional performing techniques and offering suggestions will make contributions to the field, as well. It is an undeniable fact that forming Turkey’s musical identity using the maqams which reflect it, and basic elements peculiar to genre-region and various performing techniques would awaken ethnic and regional feelings in the individual. The data of the research subject was obtained via related literature review and face-to-face interview method, and the research was done with descriptive survey method, and the opinions on using traditional music in vocal training process were tried to be described. It is considered that forming exercises that will make the individual’s voice gain durability-strength-agility and that will contribute to development of techniques special to the singing type will make significant contribution to the field and will function crucially and positively to increase the quality and perma-nence of the act. With this aim, various suggestion on the topic must be supported and the voice exercise methods for related genres should be increased in number as much as pos-sible. It is of prime importance for our national music to bring a modern and acceptable training pattern incidental to traditional Turkish music into literature, to make more de-tailed qualitative and quantitative studies so as to create exercise materials suited for the repertoire and individuals’ vocal attributes in the vocal training process, and to form new and authentic methods.
