Abstract

Magical realism, a Latin American literary movement, is a synthesis of roots of Latin America and European based literary movements. From the beginning of the 20th century to the “boom”in the second half of the century, the magical realism, which dates back to the attempts of the Spanish and other European countries and the United States to assimilate the continent, has gone through many stages. It has also took place in contemporary European and world literatures, and has made important representatives. Today, it continues to exist as a movement that preserves its popularity, and provides literary products and studies on theoretical aspects. In this study, the birth, development and spread of magical realism were explained chronologically. In the direction of Latin American culture and history, and European influence, sources and characteristics of the movement were determined, and Gabriel García Márquez’s “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings” story were studied.
