THE “SIRA GECESİ“, “KÜRSÜBAŞI GECESİ” AND “BARANA” TRADITION IN TURKISH FOLK MUSIC

Abstract

In Şanlıurfa, generally people of the same age groups meet regularly during the week for “sıra gecesi.” At homes in Elazığ-Harput, night meetings called "Kürsübaşı" take place araound a “kürsü” (a kind of small table) tos tay warm the fire, to entertain and chat. Continuing in the Balıkesir / Dursunbey district, Barana is a traditional meeting for chatting held at a specific time and place. In these three traditions there are conversations, refreshments are served, games are played, and music is performed. Sıra Gecesi, Kürsübaşı and Barana meetings were added to the UNESCO WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE representative list within the scope “Traditional Chat Meetings.” In the study, similar and different aspects of traditional Sıra Gecesi, Kürsübaşı gecesi and Barana chat meetings were compared in terms of establishment, operation and content. As a result, it can be said that there are similar and different aspects for the traditions of Sıra Gecesi, Kürsübaşı gecesi and Barana, where all are a part of the traditions of mass playing and singing, which have played an important function in folk culture in the various geographic regions of Anatolia.
