Abstract

The aim of this study to reveal the perceptions of students’ on “Space” and “Satellite” concepts through metaphors. The study is designed based on one of the qualitative research method named as phenomenology and analyzed with content analysis. The data on completing the expression “Space/Satellite….…is like. Because ….” was collected using 47 female students, 43 male students total 100 third and fourth grade elementary school students. According to our results, students created 90 valid metaphor for “Space” and 86 for “Satellite”. From the data, it is understood that mostly ‘Gap’ metaphor (f=28) is used by the participants related to space. Mostly “Television (TV) trainer” metaphor (f=20) is used by the students related to satellite. According to our results, students' perceptions of satellite and space concept are multifaceted and different. Metaphors can be used as a powerful research tool in revealing students' personal perceptions, misconceptions and incomplete information about the concept of space and satellite.
