Abstract

With the acceptance of Christianity, the Roman basilica was accepted as the most convenient structure for Christian ceremony and rituals. And became the most preferred plan type for Christianitiy and the Christian world for hundreds of years. The first two Basilicas of Hagia Sophia had a rectangular basilical plan with a wooden gable roof, which was the ordinary European style. In return the III. Hagia Sophia shows radical changes in its architectural features in respect to its former rectangular basilical form and gable roof. In this study, different cultural effects seen in the architectural design of III. Hagia Sophia will be searched and their consequences argued.
