FUNCTIONS OF VERB KAL- IN OLD ANATOLIAN TURKISH

Abstract

Old Anatolian Turkish is historical period which forms the basis of the Turkish of modern Turkey and reflect a progress in the language. As in the case with other historical periods, study of the mentioned period is significant in order to enlighten the subject. In the presented study, verb kal- is analysed in terms of structure and meaning. Determining denotative meaning and context gain meaning of words in historical texts will provide a better understanding of them. In almost every known period of Turkish language different functions and denotations were ascribed to the verb kal- and this verb was used in a productive way in Old Anatolian Turkish as well.In our study, we searched the influential works of the period as Ahmed-i Dai Divanı, Dede Korkut, Garipname, Mecmuatün-nezair, Süheyl ü Nevbahar, Yusuf u Züleyha, Yunus Emre Divanı. As a result, we identified that the verb kal- was used as main and auxiliary verbs and these were studied in two different headings here in. We also found out that twenty-two distinct denotations of verb kal- were used in these texts. Furthermore, this verb formed compound verbs and idiomatic structures by combining a noun and verb together.
