Abstract

Main argument of this study is the opposition that Committee of Union and Progres made against Sultan Abdulhamit. The early years of the 20th century passed under the shadow of the power struggle between Sultan Abdulhamid who ruled the country for 33 years and his opponents. The dominance that put Sultan Abdülhamid 2nd into power was the Young Ottoman Movement that was a pro-constitutionalism movement. However, after Sultan Abdülhamid 2nd became the Sultan, he in a way abolished the constitutionalism that he had declared by closing the parliament. With his ruling system, he revived the opposing structure that carried him to the throne. The Committee of Union and Progress is not only a political organisation but also represents a political orientation and a political position. İttihadists allied for the dethronement of Abdulhamid, proclamation of Constitutionalism, and setting up the chamber of deputies. It is seen that, İttihadists who opposed to Abdulhamid didn’t have an alternative political programme. In this sense, the Committee of Union and Progress composed of Ottoman soldiers and intellectuals collaborated with the non-Muslim Ottoman subjects in order to make its opposition more comprehensive and effective.
