Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effects of block programming tools on students' motivation by comparing with unplugged programming activities used in programming education at k12 level. Designed as a quasi-experimental model with a pretest-posttest control group, the study was conducted on two classes of 6th grade students. The experimental group, which was selected randomly from groups, was trained with unplugged programming activities while the control group was trained using the block programming tool. Motivation scale was used as a data collection tool. At the end of the training, t-test results for paired samples that are used to determine the changes in the motivation levels of the groups showed that there is a positive development in the motivation levels of the students for both groups. However, the results of the two-factor analysis of variance for mixed measurements showed that there is no significant difference in the point increase between the groups. The conclusion that the common effect of group and gender was not significant on the motivation levels of the groups was reached by two-factor variance analysis for independent samples. The results showed that the activities designed for the target audience in programming education, regardless of method and tool, can have positive effects on students' motivation levels.
