Abstract

Aim: This study was planned to determine the susceptibility to orthorexia nervosa as well as the influencing factors (ON) in male students. Method: The study was conducted in the Departments of Nutrition and Dietetics in a state university in the province of Kırklareli and a private university in Istanbul in 2018. The ORTO-15 scale and the questionnaire for the general characteristics, dietary habits and health knowledge of the individuals were applied to 136 male students who were voluntary to participate in the study. Those with a score of less than 40 were evaluated as orthorectic. The frequencies of the variables are n (%). The relationship be-tween the orthorexia status and the variables was analyzed by chi-square test. All statistical analyzes were performed with IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 program and analyzed and reported at 95% confidence level and α = 0.05 significance level. Results: It was found that the average age of the individuals was 21.89±1.90 years, their average height was 177.12±5.73 cm, their average weight was 73.66±9.19 kg and their average BMI was 23.90±4.87 kg/m2. The male students who had the highest agreement level among the items of the ORTO-15 was "Do you think unhealthy foods are also sold in supermarkets?" and the item with the lowest participation level was "Do the thoughts about healthy nutrition worry you for more than three hours in a day?" (p<0.05). 70.6% of the male students had an orthorexic tendency, their mean score of ORTO-15 test was 37.30±4.56. Conclusion: Male students were found to have orthorexic tendencies at a very high rate. The effect of gender and the possible effects of eating disorders in terms of symptomatology should be clarified by further studies. It is possible to see orthorexia nervosa as a disturbed eating habit associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
