Abstract

Sait Faik, one of the milestones of Turkish storytelling, gave new dimensions to the status of storytelling initiated by Memduh Şevket Esendal; he played a pioneering role in the development and modernization of the story with the poetic language and different narrative forms he used. Building his art upon his love of human beings, in his stories Sait Faik mirrored the little people with whom he was closely acquainted, with whom he made friends or observed, and their restricted worlds. Fishermen, for Sait Faik, have a special place among those who barely make a living by doing everyday work. The author was highly interested in the fishermen who make their living from the sea and their world intertwined with that activity. Therefore, he used fishermen as the main characters in his stories. His stories, in which he described the relationship between man and the sea, the struggles of poor fishermen, the problems they had in sharing the harvest among them, the world of fish, are remarkable for their use of many terms related to fishing and sea. In this study, 19 stories that include the human-sea relationship, the struggles of poor fishermen, their problems in sharing the harvest, the world of fish and fishing and marine terminology will be discussed.
