Abstract

Improvement in paper technology contributes significantly to the popularization and development of printing techniques. Today, machine technologies have become so diverse that not only paper but other types of printable materials are also used in printing. This diversity in printing machines, which continue developing industrially as well as digitally, offers many options to the designer in the production phase. For a graphic designer to do his job well he has to learn printing techniques and technologies which affect design and application processes as well as the quality of the obtained prints. This study examines digital printing, which has an important place in traditional printing techniques and today’s printing technologies. This research takes a general survey model as a basis among the qualitative research techniques and the related literature is reviewed, including virtual resources. According to the findings, we can list the traditional printing techniques and technologies which are used commonly in the industry as letterpress, rotogravure, offset and screen printing. But another technique whose use is increasing today is digital printing. In this technique, designs made in digital media are printed by directly transferring the paint to the printable material without the use of a mould. In conclusion, the graphic designer has to choose one or more of these printing techniques directly in the designing, application or production phase. All of these techniques have advantages and disadvantages. And they all differ in terms of quality, speed, cost, printing number and the material used. The graphic designer has to think through and make a plan for his choices by considering the media, course, cost, capacity, printing time and quantity of the design he will make. If planning or decision-making is poor, the quality of the product will be affected directly and there will be instability in cost of production.
