Abstract

Triphthongs are “a union of three vowels” pronounced in one syllable they are formed by a quick but smooth movement from one vowel to another that passes over a third one. They are found in such British English pronunciations as in “fire” “player” “mower” “employer” and in some others as claimed by observers as having found similar traits. They also exist in other languages. It is important to know about them as they easily cause communication problems if confused with similar long vowels or diphthongs. However in teaching EFL, triphthongs are often neglected and are not taught as much as other segmental phonemes as diphthongs. The author of this article attempts to use similar methodogly in teaching triphthongs by first providing awareness of their structure of combination of diphthongs+monophongs. He then then solidifies their instruction through minimal pairs by monothongs+diphthongs and finally gives many examples from English. He uses examples from Turkish referring to their familiary of the concept in the learner’s own language.
