Abstract

Muğla can be regarded as one of the first areas of Turkey’s foreign tourism activities started. Muğla is located close to Greek Islands. Thanks to this advantage it has become the site of daily visits of European tourists coming to this island after 1960s. Tourists interest in the region attracted the attention of governments. Governments have tried to improve transportation network that is necessary for tourism since 1970s. Dalaman Airport is also built as a result of studies on transportation and tourism. Muğla tourism was dependent on the Greek islands before 1982. With the introduction of Dalaman Airport has region tourism gained momentum. Muğla tourism had developed rapidly between 1982- 1990. As a result, the number of foreign tourists coming to Mugla from 1980 to 1990 increased by 900%. In this article, establishment of Dalaman Airport and its effects on region tourism movements evaluated. This article was prepared with the help of the Prime Minister’s Republic Archives, Ankara National Library Archives, newspapers and audited works.
