Abstract

This work focuses how the Ottoman State navigated through the Crete Issue, one of the main crises it came face to face with in the 19th century – which has been dubbed the longest century theempire has had to endure. It puts forth how the Turkish state marked progress in this political and historical period of time. Moreover, it examines how the Eastern Question – in connection to Crete was evaluated in Europe, especially by Germany which completed its unification late. The work also looks at how the Crete Issue affected Ottoman - Germany relations. In this context, the prevailing tensions and crises between the Ottoman State and Germany in Crete, which came about within the framework of political, military, religious, and economic relations, were examined.
