Abstract

With the increase in the variation of cultural products on cultural platform, the interactivity between different countries and societies with regard to television broadcasting sector have intensified and diversified. Meanwhile, through the intercultural flow of TV drama series, a common storytelling environment is formed in the global arena. One of the elements contributing to this is the increased production of adaptations. Within this context, this paper concentrates on adaptations of foreign TV dramas serials that have been amongst the broadcasts of Turkish televisions between January 2001 and June 2018. Data belong to the original versions of adaptated TV drama serials such as the names of source texts, the countries of origin, genre, the number of episodes and the TV network collected. Basic data on the adapted TV serial dramas are explored while comparison between the originals and the adaptations in terms of production and storytelling is presented. As a result of this research, it is inferred that the initial examples of adaptation TV serial dramas produced through acquisition of broadcasting rights of foreign dramas and local adaptation of storytelling are; original productions in English language from mainly United States and England. Later on, disposition turned towards East Asian TV serial dramas, South Korean ones being the foremost. The majority, which had been in favour of sitcom genre adaptation productions, turned towards drama genre later on due to the reflection of Asian culture. But, it is observed that, not every drama adaptation that has received acclaim abroad managed to achieve the same success in Turkey due to cultural distinctions and executive factors. Moreover, as well as similarities, there are also differences between the local adaptations of drama serials and their originals in terms of storytelling and re-visualization. This formation is a outcome of the cultural conformity in the adaptation process and is also part of localization
