Abstract

Rapidly improving technology at the end of the Twentieth Century had a big impact on the development of means of transport. Travelling opportunities al-so increased corresponding to these developments that paved the way to the manufacture of high-speed trains, airplanes and various watercraft. These fac-tors, blending with the vacation need of the modern human being who has harsh working conditions, precipitated tourism to become an industry itself. In the study the role of the fraction called “middle class” in the West, in the in-troduction of such an industry has been highlighted. This class of people who desire to go through a luxurious touristic experience with their short annual leave and restricted financial means are also known to purchase souvenirs during their journey. The study dwells on the fact that these souvenirs are a reflection of Kitsch which emerged with the feasibilities of Industrial Revolu-tion and which has been looked down on as replica art. The objective of the study is to emphasize the relation between tourism, hedonism and consume through photography projects of Martin Parr who focuses on middle class he-donism and consumer habits. Following the process in which the photographs were analyzed through document analysis method, it has been concluded that today middle class has become a vital part of tourism industry and that the middle class hedonism has a significant role in the proliferation of Kitsch cul-ture.
