Abstract

MDP (Nationalist Democracy Party) was established by the retired general and former ambassador Turgut Sunalp on May 16, 1983 after the Coup of September 12, 1980 and took its place in the Turkish political history as the first party established during the transition process to democracy. The party aspired to political power by completing its organizational missions in a short time all around Turkey during the preparation for the general elections of November 6, 1983 when the democratic process started. There is no academic article in the literature on MDP that was established after 1980-1983 period, in which democracy was interrupted, and called as a nonpartisan interim regime or military tutelage regime. The original aspect of this study is motivated to compensate for this shortcoming. Although the MDP, which had taken the September 12 philosophy as its maxim before the General Elections of 1983, was considered to win the elections, this party gained the opportunity to be represented in parliament as the 3rd party with only 71 seats after ANAP (Motherland Party) and HP (Populist Party) having the qualification to participate in the elections. Then, with the dramatic decline of MDP in the local elections on March 25, 1984, the party had to end its legal entity in 1986, when Ulku Soylemezoglu was the leader.
