Abstract

The subconscious concept was introduced by Freud. However many scientists had mentioned to subconscious concept before Freud. As a method of treatment, it has been systematized with Freud to explain consciousness with psychoanalysis. In the field of art, conscious dealing with about the concept of subconscious is seen in surrealism. Surrealism as the art movement has handled the subconscious concept. Dada Artists have housed in their philosophy that spontaneity, coincidence and artistic actions made without thought and used the method of spontaneous expression that the techniques used in psychoanalysis. In this work, it is questioned whether Dada artists or surrealist artists approach the concept of subconscious in real life. In visual arts, Dada seems to have endorsed the jung that introduced the concept of collective subconscious. Art did not plan when presenting collective consciousness in Zurich but the artists of surrealism are consciously interested in the subconscious, aware of Freud. Dada of the time of the social destruction of the World War I and Surrealism of the peaceful aftermath of the war were compared which subconscious interest through visuals. In terms of Dada's methods, more revealed consciousness than surrealism.
