Abstract

Education exists in elements such as the order of social life, community values, environmental conditions, and aesthetic values. Culture incorporates all areas which belong to humans and in which humans are engaged. Coppersmithing is a form of Turkish traditional culture and handicrafts and one of the most important forms of metalsmithing. Coppersmithing is one of the oldest handicrafts because copper is considered to be the first metal used by humans. Traditional handicrafts are a reflection of social culture and involve the information of artifacts created by humans using their knowledge, skills and tastes and simple hand tools. Thus, they have been passed down from generation to generation through cultural education. The Gerede district in Bolu and the Beypazarı district in Ankara located on the Silk Road (also known as the Baghdad Road) share similar characteristics in terms of handcrafts. Ewers (ibrik in Turkish) are forms of coppersmithing in Gerede. They are frequently made by craftsmen in Beypazarı and eagerly used by the locals. Ewers are among indispensable items in the dowry of young women of marriageable age in Beypazarı and are shaped by craftsmen hammering sheets of copper on an anvil. However, technological developments have led to a decrease in the use of copper wares, which are an important part of traditional cultures. Thus, ewers or large lidded jugs (güğüm in Turkish) have been replaced by solar water heating systems, water heaters, and bathroom boilers. Ewers, jugs, similar wares, and craftsmen have gradually diminished and the profession of coppersmithing is on the verge of extinction. The purpose of this study is to address the cultural heritage in relation to education and culture and to pass it down to young generations from an academic point of view.
