PUBLIC BROADCASTING AND TRT RADIO: THE POSITION OF TRT RADIOS STATIONS WITHIN THE RADIO MEDIA FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

A survey with respect to radio broadcasting of TRT (Turkish Radio Television), a public broadcasting corporation in Turkey, was conducted in this study. A conceptual survey regarding public broadcasting and TRT was conducted in the first part of the study and key functions of public broadcasting were discussed. After the second part of the study addressing the findings of the academic surveys undertaken to this day with respect to TRT, we passed on to implementing part of the study. Answers were sought for the question, “What does the youth think about TRT Radio stations?”, in the implementing part of the survey where descriptive research method was applied, and it was examined how radio stations owned by TRT were assessed through the views of the youth. The survey was conducted with the aim to determine listening habits among university students concerning TRT radio stations. This survey is important in terms of gathering opinions of university students with regards to TRT radio stations. This survey is the first in its field as there are no studies in literature on listening habits with respect to TRT radio stations specific to university students. The survey was implemented with a questionnaire applied to 1860 university students randomly selected and residing within the borders of Istanbul province. There are demographic questions within the first part of the questionnaire and second part consists of questions regarding radio listening habits of university students. The third part of the questionnaire contains questions on whether university students listen to TRT radio stations and university students’ opinions on TRT radio stations. The results of the survey reveal that university students living in Istanbul listen to TRT FM the most from among TRT radio stations, they do not follow new media platforms of TRT radio stations and they think TRT radio stations do not have the functions necessary in public broadcasting. The university students stated that they find TRT radio stations less successful than commercial radio stations and TRT radio stations have toreoriantate themselves in parallel with free market conditions. Using a certain part of the government budget as well as deductions from electricity bills and various taxes of the public as economic source, it is significant for the efficiency of TRT Corporation to carry out broadcasting proper to both public broadcasting framework and requests of the youngsters.
