Abstract

The aim of this study is to approach translation from intersemiotic perspective. Through examining adaptation within the context of translation, it is intended to be emphasized that translation is not just a means of transfer between two natural languages but also a channel of communication between linguistic and non-linguistic sign systems. The source text of our study, graphic adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which is the result of the desire to convey this important tragedy with a modern English and with the support of illustrations to today’s reader, is assessed to be a good example of adaptation and transformation of linguistic signs into non-linguistic signs. In our study, graphic adaptation of Macbeth, its Turkish translation, and the original text of Shakespeare and its Turkish translations are examined in terms of intersemiotic translation and rewriting; and the differences between original and adaptation and gains/losses resulting from them are tried to be assessed.
