Abstract

Occupying a major place in the vocabulary of Arabic, the hemze is also available in the phonetics of Turkish. Thus, it is considerably challenging to pronounce Turkish words that got derived from this sound. Turkish has ensured the conformity of these words that conflict with the sound scheme and euphonism of Turkish into its own phonetics and pronunciation principles by conducting several modifications on the hemze of these words. However, the modifications have not taken place in all contemporary dialects of Turkish in the same way. These dialects have followed the same route in several directions while they have displayed differences in certain directions. This has caused the words with hemze jointly shared by contemporary dialects of Turkish to come into different forms. Thus, the words with hemze have located into contemporary dialects of Turkish with their new forms. This study deals with the situation of hemze in Arabic words used in contemporary dialects of Turkish. The introduction of the study involves general information on hemze while following parts of the study model the transformation of hemze and sound modifications in the words derived from Arabic with several examples. The objective of this study is to contribute to other studies that will be conducted with reference to contemporary dialects of Turkish.
