Abstract

Graphic design has gone through many phases till now. The ongoing debate on form and functionality continues throughout history. These debates have continued between designers who advocate a modernist view, which often thinks functionality is important, and designers, who advocate a postmodernist view of demolishing monotony and rules. The postmodern approaches, especially those dating back to the late 20th century when the rules were reformulated, have greatly influenced today's graphic design. This study focuses on the postmodern approaches that have emerged over time in graphic design and the origins of these approaches. Relations between art movements, people and institutions, which are effective in the formation of postmodern graphic design concept, are examined in the historical context. In the last part, David Carson, who has a graphic design style defined as postmodern, and his works which have influenced many designers from 90s to the day are examined in detail.
