Abstract

In the 18th century, during which the Europe and Ottoman Empire had close relations, a large number of diplomats, their families and the specialists who served them came to Istanbul. Thus, for these visitors, the need for establishing new living spaces and expanding these spaces when needed arouse. In this study, Belgrade Forest and Tarabya, which were especially important for European diplomats and travelers in the 18th century Istanbul, and reflection of the changes of these regions in paintings were examined. The conformity between the daily life practices of Europeans living in the Ottoman capital in those days and the issues in the pictures as well as remarks of the itinerants on these places in their notes show that revival in Belgrade Forest and Tarabya was reflected in visual and literary world concurrently. While the urban image of Istanbul was changing, Jean Baptiste-Vanmour, Antoine Ignace Melling, Luigi Mayer, Michel Francois Préaulx, William Henry Bartlett and many other artists reflected the life in these parts of the city on their canvasses, and pictures of these places in collections, travel books and albums were highlighted, which were all related to European people’s moving into new living spaces. Learning about the artistic works produced in 18th century Istanbul will shed a light to understand the social and cultural atmosphere in which these issues came into existence and their importance in the history of the city.
